Deer Valley hosts Navajo handmade rug sale to support Navajo elders

The 27th annual Adopt-A-Native-Elder rug show and sale has evolved into what may be the largest event of its kind in the country.The event runs Nov. 11-13 at Deer Valley's main base lodge.

Every November, Deer Valley hosts the event is a market for the Elders' handmade rugs, jewelry and crafts. Proceeds from the sale help Elders buy food, firewood and hay for the winter.

The traditional rug designs tell the stories of many of the weavers' clans. The Eagle, Hummingbird and Butterfly Clans are all represented. Other clan animals such as Bear, Elk and Deer are also common. The weavers also like to use symbols of the mountains, clouds, corn and flowers to reflect the beauty of their land and its teachings.

Friday, Nov. 11 is an exclusive preview showing and sale that includes hors d'oeuvres, entertainment and a live auction. Admission is $30 for adults, $10 for children under age 12.

Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 12 and 13. 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Admission is $5 or canned food donations. In addition to the rug and crafts sales, there's a Princess contest, a Navajo Grandma Idol contest, dances and demonstrations.
