This basketball season, we'll be choosing one basketball game between our local schools here in the Salt Lake valley to highlight each week.

It didn’t take long for Copper Hills’ boys basketball team to get out to an 11-2 lead over Corner Canyon, forcing the Chargers to take a timeout. That early run proved decisive for the Grizzlies, who emerged with a 57-47 victory.

“Everyone will tell you a fast start is really important. You don’t want to play from behind. Playing from behind is hard. You use a lot of energy. It’s much easier to play with a lead,” said Copper Hills assistant coach Brian Allfrey following the game.

The Grizzlies were led in scoring by junior guard Stone Hutchings with 21 points to go along with 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Senior center Trevon Allfrey recorded a double-double with 16 points, 13 rebounds and 6 blocks. Tyler Bush and Perry Dettling each added 8 points.

Being able to rely on multiple players to produce on offense makes the coaches’ jobs much easier, said Allfrey. “The defenders are set to take certain things away from us. Other guys have got to be able to make plays and they did that tonight.”

Corner Canyon managed to keep the game from getting out of hand, even outscoring Copper Hills in the final three quarters. Early in the fourth quarter, the Chargers were able to cut the lead to four but it wasn’t enough as Copper Hills finished the game on a 7-1 run.

Gabe Toombs led the Chargers in scoring with 20. Luke Warnock and Hayden Welling added 11 and 7 points respectively.

Next up for Copper Hills is a home game against Timpanogos this Friday. Corner Canyon meanwhile will be playing host to the second Corner Canyon Tournament of Champions, where it will face off against Cedar City in the first round on Thursday.
