Kathie Brown Roberts
Kathie Brown Roberts, P.C. is a small law office located in Sandy, concentrating in estate planning, elder-law (including veterans' benefits planning) and general business law. Admitted first to the California Bar in 1991, Kathie Roberts has been practicing law in Utah since 2005 is an active member of the Utah State Bar and an inactive member of the California and Alaska Bar associations.
Ms. Roberts is a member of the National Academy of Elder-Law Attorneys, the Salt Lake Estate Planning Council, the Utah Bar Association Elder-Law Committee, a member of the estate planning section of the Utah State Bar and an accredited attorney with the Veterans' Administration (accredited to advise on available benefits, but not employed by the VA).
"I am passionate about assisting the elderly in our community. As a member of the Utah State Bar Elder-Law Committee, I provide routine pro-bono legal consultations at the Sandy Senior Center," Ms. Roberts says. "Sometimes the aging process challenges the ability to understand or otherwise cope with issues which may have been routine issues to deal with earlier in life. Helping to address those issues brings seniors tremendous relief. I am privileged to help in this regard."
Addressing estate planning in general, Ms. Roberts says she often receives calls from people who only want help with basic estate planning since they don't feel they have an "estate." Although the word "estate" admittedly conjures up ideas of vast wealth, estate planning is just a general term that encompasses three basic aspects of planning: asset transfer, financial management when incapacitated and medical choices upon incapacity and imminent death.
Often a will, durable power of attorney and advance directive will provide for a person's wishes effectively, Ms. Roberts says. Other times, it may be advisable to have a trust. A will or other plan is not mandatory but without them the state will dictate who will inherit the estate upon death. Ms. Roberts says if you have specific requests for how things are to be handled, a will is crucial to make sure your final requests are met.
In addition to assistance with estate planning, Kathie Brown Roberts, P.C. represents numerous small businesses in the Salt Lake Valley offering negotiation, dispute resolution, contract review, document drafting and general legal services.
"If I had one overall piece of advice to offer business owners or prospective business owners, it would be to invest in legal review of any agreement prior to signing the document, whether it is a lease, a proposal, an offer or any other contract," Ms. Roberts says. "I see many business clients who have entered into agreements without really understanding the contents. It's much more difficult to modify or terminate a contract after it is signed."
