JDCHS athlete named Academic All-State

Juan Diego Catholic High School’s Courtney May was named Academic All-State for her excellence in the classroom and as a member of the Soaring Eagle’s cross country team.

May, daughter of Monroe and Jeri May, has maintained a 3.99 GPA throughout her high school career while being involved in several extracurricular activities.

“I feel incredibly blessed,” May said. “I’ve tried to work hard and challenge myself throughout high school,

so it was nice to be recognized.”

Cross country coach Christine Petrone has been a coach and a teacher to Courtney over the past few years. “She is so deserving of this honor,” Petrone said.

Petrone also credited Courtney for her improvement over the last two seasons as a member of the cross country squad. “She improved this year by leaps and bounds,” Petrone said, noting that the senior was often among the top five runners on the team.

Although the girls squad didn’t qualify for the state meet this year, May felt the team had great chemistry. “Individually, I didn’t set any world records but I had a lot of fun and significantly improved my times compared to previous seasons,” she said.

May also plays the violin, competes in debate and is involved in several JDCHS clubs. She said balancing schoolwork and athletics is difficult but not impossible. “It’s tough sometimes but I’ve figured out how to prioritize and manage my time effectively, which makes it very doable,” she said.

The senior is applying to several out-of-state universities to further her education with the ultimate goal of

being a lawyer.
