Read all about it: Draper hosts girls only book club.
For the Draper Library, reading truly is a family affair.
Every month, several libraries in the Salt Lake County Library System, including the Draper Library at 1136 East Pioneer Road, host Great Reads for Girls: A Mother/Daughter Book Group.
“This is a very special event and it is always lots of fun for the girls and their moms,” children’s desk manager Ann Maybaum said. “Everyone is really excited and they love discussing the books with each other.”
The group is open for girls, ages 8-10, and their moms. The purpose of the group is to encourage mothers and daughters to read a specific book from a list of titles selected by library staff. Meetings are held in the library’s meeting room on the third Wednesday of each month.
“And no boys or younger siblings are allowed,” Maybaum said.
In January, the mothers and daughters of the Draper club will be discussing a special selection written by a member of the Salt Lake County Library staff, Bobbie Pyron. The book, titled “A Dog’s Way Home,” discusses the enduring relationship of two best friends, a young girl and her sheepdog.
When the book group meets on Jan. 18, they will hear from the author herself as well as the author’s own canine friend who will be in attendance.
“We try to have a special event at least once each year where the guests can meet the author of the book they read,” Maybaum said. “It is especially exciting since many of the girls are interested in writing and want to become authors themselves.”
Along with a discussion about the book, members of the group will also enjoy a treat and a craft project or activity provided by the Draper Library.
“For those who want to join, there isn’t any membership fee and there isn’t any pressure to finish the book by a certain date,” Maybaum said. “We simply want girls and their moms to enjoy reading these special books together and we welcome any more that would like to join.”
