Troy Walker, Alan Summerhays and Bill Colbert were sworn in Jan. 3 to serve on the Draper City Council.

This will be Walker and Summerhays’ second term in office. Colbert will begin his fourth term. All three councilmembers are continuing the work they started in their previous appointments to the council.

“My main focus at the beginning of this term is a three pronged approach: to establish good, sound economic development; to continue development of parks and trails; and to keep our taxes where they are,” Walker said.

The other two councilmembers have the same focus. After they were sworn into office, the council concluded a five year settlement over the SunCrest development with Zions Bank. The council is also continuing to monitor the TRAX development in the Draper area. They are currently brainstorming ideas for a possible theme for the Draper platform, according to Walker.

For future projects, Walker is developing plans to present to the city the construction of a recreation center. The main idea for the center is to house a large indoor playing surface for soccer, lacrosse, football, and other outdoor sports. It would provide a place for residents to play these types of sports during the winter months.

“A lot of the council feels the same way about the need for this type of recreational center in Draper. We are interested to see how the voters feel about it and if they would use it,” Walker said.

Summerhays said that his main focus will be to see if the recently completed 12300 South U-turns have been good or bad for businesses in that area.

“From what I understand, the businesses are down, but we won’t know for sure until the figures come in,” Summerhays said. “We’ll have to discuss what we’ll do about it if it does hurt the businesses.”

Summerhays is also focusing on the development of new business in the area, such as the Living Planet Aquarium and the new Ebay extensions. In the future he would like to see if the city has the revenues to complete the two ball fields at Galena Hills Park.

During Colbert’s previous three terms, he has “promoted the extensive commercial, retail, business and job development seen through the community,” according to his campaign website. He is currently employed in the Utah Governer’s Office of Economic Development.
