Oxford Academy and Oxford Learning Source
When it comes to educating children, the professionals at Oxford Academy and Oxford Learning Source, located at 1259 East 12300 South, are dedicated to helping your child succeed. Oxford Academy is an accredited private school that serves children in grades K-12. Oxford Learning Source is the place for after school tutoring and homework help.
Kara Ditty assists Oxford Director Kathy Cutler and says the students receive the kind of one-on-one attention that allows them to thrive.
“Oxford Academy has a small learning environment that enables students to experience success in school and develop learning skills that will benefit them throughout their lives,” Kara says.
Students at Oxford Academy benefit from a teacher to student ratio of 1:4. The first three hours of the day focus on the core subjects of reading, writing and mathematics. These courses are designed for each individual student.
Curriculum is mastery based. It is approved by the State of Utah and follows the state curriculum guidelines. Because the courses are mastery based, students must pass them with at least 85 percent before they can move on to the next course.
“When our students finish their program, we know they’ve mastered the material before they move on to the next subject,” Kara says.
Oxford Academy offers state-of- the-art computer technology to supplement and enhance learning. Voice recognition software assists students with their phonics and oral reading skills. The curriculum includes challenging material for older students, to increase comprehension and reading speeds to prepare them for college entrance exams.
Students who need a little more help because of a learning disability, or who use Individualized Education Plans, might be eligible for a Carson Smith Scholarship to help with the cost of tuition. Kara says because of the individual attention, students that struggle in a traditional school setting often do well because of the amount of interaction with their teachers.
Sometimes help at school isn’t enough for some students to keep up with classes. At Oxford Learning Source, dedicated tutors are on hand to help students in nearly every subject. It is also accredited with the state, which means students can earn credits that can be transferred to their high school.
From basic math classes all the way to college algebra, tutors can help students understand concepts and potentially increase math scores. Oxford Learning Source tutors are well versed in their subject and are able to help students learn it in a way that makes sense to them. ACT preparation sessions are also available.
Parents are kept in the loop about their student’s progress. After every 18 lessons, parents meet with the tutors to see what progress is being made. Students are also tested after 18 lessons to make sure they are making progress. It helps keep parents informed and it allows tutors to make adjustments to the student’s curriculum for optimal success.
