Corner Canyon mountain biking back ‘doing something they love’

The four-time state champion mountain biking team from Corner Canyon High School took home six first-place finishes at Powder Mountain Aug. 29 and six at Price Sept. 12 while finishing first as a team in both races. “We had awesome races and more than any wins or losses, it was just awesome to have these kids out racing and doing something they love,” head coach Whitney Pogue said.

At Powder Mountain, Ethan Lassiter took first in the Varsity Boys division and Mya Graham took first in Varsity Girls. Other top awards were Joe Hansen (1st, JV A Boys) and Tanner Shallenberger (1st, JV C Boys). Harrison Reading (Freshman A Boys) and Emma Hamblin (Freshman Girls) also took home titles in their categories. Other top-five finishes were Ethan Altamirano (2nd, JV A Boys), Parker Anderson (2nd, Freshman A Boys), Carter Bedell (2nd, JV C Boys), Nicholas Gordon (2nd, JV B Boys), Elline Harrison (2nd, Freshman Girls), Skye Meyers (2nd, Varsity Girls), Ethan Hill (3rd, JV C Boys), Eric Jorgensen (2nd, Freshman B Boys), Tessa Liddell (2nd, JV A Girls), Henry Atkins (3rd, Freshman B Boys), Sam Bodell (3rd, JV B Boys), Tate Larrabee (3rd, Freshman A Boys), Katelyn Newby (3rd, JV B Girls), Sam Free (4th, Freshman A Boys), Lucas Grimes (4th, JV A Boys), Stella Hadden (4th, JV B Girls), Daisy Miller (4th, JV A Girls), Phillip Petersen (4th, JV C Boys), Isaac Carver (5th, Freshman A Boys), Claire Chapman (5th, Freshman Girls) and Grace Chapman (5th, JV A Girls).

In the race at Price, Reading, Matt Dorny (Freshman B Boys), Hamblin, Hansen, Newby and Petersen placed first. Other top finishes were: in the Freshman A Boys race, Andersen (2nd), Maximum Saxton (3rd), Larrabee (4th), Carver (5th) and Free (6th); in Freshman B Boys, Jorgensen (2nd) and Parker Cheng (5th); in the Freshman Girls, Claire Chapman (4th) and Harrison (5th); in JV A Boys, Altamirano (2nd), Grimes (3rd), Caleb Carroll (5th) and Noah Pogue (6th); in JV A Girls, Miller (2nd), Liddell (3rd) and Grace Chapman (5th); in JV B Boys, Bodell (3rd), Austin Shipp (5th) and Gordon (6th); in JV B Girls, Hadden (5th); in JV C Boys, Bedell (2nd) and Kamden Dillon (5th); in the Varsity Boys division, Lassiter (3rd); and in the Varsity Girls race, Meyers (2nd), Maci Waldron (3rd) and Mia Menlove (6th).

The Chargers are scheduled to race at Vernal before the East Regionals Championship in Cedar City Oct. 10. The state championships will be Oct. 23-24 at the Desert Canyon Trails in St. George.
