Rio Tinto Kennecott Visitor Experience
Tours of one of the world’s largest open-pit mines now open; ticket proceeds benefit local charities
All are invited to tour one of the world’s largest open-pit mines with this unique experience, including self-guided exhibits, up-close views of large-scale mining equipment, and shuttle rides to the mine overlook. Rio Tinto Kennecott’s Bingham Canyon Mine opened in 1903 and is one of the top-performing mines in the world, providing more wealth for the state of Utah than any other company over that period.
The mine operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, producing Premier American copper and other critical minerals. The visitor experience is focused on educating about the key role Kennecott’s copper plays in modern life as well as its safe mining practices and responsible environmental stewardship. Guests are invited to learn about history and see first-hand the vast scale of Kennecott’s operation, vehicles, and artifacts. Visitors can discover how ore gets processed and refined to become 99.99% pure copper, an essential element in today’s infrastructure, manufacturing, and technology.
Every dollar from ticket sales is donated to the Kennecott Charitable Foundation, a nonprofit established by Rio Tinto in 1992 that supports Utah charities and organizations serving vulnerable populations across the Salt Lake region.
