Urban Sailor Coffee brings specialty coffee to Sugar House

Feb 09, 2022 11:32AM ● By Peri Kinder

Nothing is more welcoming than the smell of quality coffee in a cozy coffee shop. At Urban Sailor Coffee at 1327 E. 2100 S. in Sugar House, you’ll find the best warm drinks, the most comfortable spaces and one of the most beautiful views in the Salt Lake Valley.

Owned by Tyler Anderson and his son Archer, Urban Sailor Coffee offers specialty coffee not often found outside of Seattle. Tyler moved to Sugar House from Seattle more than 19 years ago and combines his love of quality coffee with his love for the neighborhood - and motorcycles. One of the best parts of this project is that it has given Tyler a chance to work closely with his son and partner Archer as well as his three other sons, Levi, Canon, and Burton, who all work at Urban Sailor Coffee.

“During COVID, we were brainstorming about building a small business,” he says. “We created a mobile coffee cart, built into the sidecar of a motorcycle. We took it to events and festivals last summer and it went really well.”

Although the original idea for Urban Sailor Coffee was dreamed up several years ago, Tyler found the perfect location for a brick-and-mortar coffee shop at 21st and View, while walking through his Sugar House neighborhood last fall, directly across from Sugar House Park. The shop takes advantage of the beautiful views with south-facing windows and a handcrafted wood bar for customers to sit and enjoy their favorite warm drink.

Urban Sailor Coffee opened in December of 2021 and has quickly become a neighborhood favorite. Customers love the Italian-style espresso, served in small, ceramic mugs, and brewed with the only Mavam Espresso machine in Utah. The shop also offers lattes, Americanos, mochas and cappuccinos, as well as less common offerings such as flat whites and cortados.

As a coffee enthusiast, Tyler likes to educate customers about coffee. He says “specialty coffee” isn’t just a tagline - it’s the highest grade of coffee available. Speciality coffee is defined as any coffee that scores more than 80 points on a 100 point scale. This coffee is usually grown at high altitudes and sold at a premium.

Tyler hopes customers will come to Urban Sailor Coffee with the intention of slowing down, enjoying the atmosphere, the quality drinks and pastries, and the upgraded high-speed WiFi. With comfortable seating, there’s no better way to spend time than sipping your favorite brew with good company, or a good book or even a game of chess.

Along with specialty coffees, Urban Sailor Coffee offers Steven Smith Teamaker organic teas, Gourmet hot chocolate using Ghirardelli, Anchorhead Coffee beans, and locally-made pastries.

You can also find branded merchandise like hats, T-shirts, hoodies and mugs with the distinctive anchor logo, and you can check out the motorcycle coffee bar at the back of the shop (unless it's out at an event of course).
